Working on my little side project – SecretSides.com

Now that we have a bit of a routine down with the peanut I can use some of my vacation time to play around on one of my little internet side projects: SecretSides.com – a social network for rock climbers to find new climbing partners and locals that can show you the “Secret Sides” of their mountain.

I started this project a few months ago – and I am woefully behind on my own deadlines – but at last it’s finally at least in a workable shape. If you love to rock climb go check out SecretSides.com and let me know what you think.

Perhaps when the Peanut is a bit bigger she will also get into rock climbing and we can all go together soon enough – but until then I guess I have to live vicariously through my little website.

Vacation time is near

One of the nice things about working in Germany is the 30 days of vacation you get to take every year, as well as a whole bunch of bank holidays. Things have been rather hectic lately and since I have only taken single days here and there on top of the two weeks I took in April I have been getting a bit burnt out.

Initially I wanted to save 2 weeks for when the little one is born in November and leave about a week of vacation for odd days I might need to take before the end of the year. This morning I was feeling pretty down about the prospect of not having vacation until the end of November. Since I had to postpone a business trip abroad for a month, I realized there was a whole week where I had cleared my schedule for the trip – only 6 more working days from now.

I made sure there is going to be someone in the office that days that can cover me and quickly decided to jump on the opportunity. Of course the Mrs. is very excited that we’ll get to spend some free time together.

Another Day on a short leash…

This weekend I once again realized that working for “Da Man” sucks. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy what I am doing. I decided to take advantage of the 30 days of paid vacation thing they have over here in Germany and took Friday and Monday off. We had guest in town over the weekend and I wanted to help my wife get the house ready for our visitors.

With my mind already in long weekend mode by mid afternoon Thursday the phone rang and my boss called, telling me a big announcement could come on Friday and it would be better if I canceled my day off. To say I was disappointed was an understatement. My list of chores was long and with people coming in it definitely needed to get done. By the time I dragged my tired ass out of bed Friday morning my mood was at a low point. Running late my mobile rang just as I was ready to leave the house Friday morning with my boss on the other end telling me the announcement was postponed – SCORE! Vacation after all!!

The downside of Friday’s day off – announcement was to be Monday or Tuesday. Well, last night checking if I could stay home today I was told announcement on Tuesday, with a pre-conference that I could dial in later in the day. Like the trained monkey that I am I dutifully kept checking my blackberry all day and staying away from longer projects which I might need to interrupt for this spur of the moment meeting.

When 5pm rolled around I got a call from my Boss again – pre announcement meeting postponed until tomorrow. Is it just me, or am I on a really short leash regarding work. Being a free spirit for most of my life I am not liking the idea of being a trained monkey on call 24/7 one bit… what will happen when it’s missing the first day of school, graduation, or other major life event because of a meeting that might or might not happen.
